There are three methods to overclock a laptop: tweak the BIOS settings, use generic overclocking software to adjust CPU voltage and timing, and with Intel and AMD programs designed specifically for that purpose. The Intel and AMD overclocking programs, Turbo Boost and Overdrive respectively, work only with each company’s higher-end multi-core processors. Regardless of which method you employ, remember that overclocking voids any warranty your laptop may have and can permanently damage the machine, a process called “bricking.” Careless laptop overclocking can help you create a rather expensive, if somewhat unusual, doorstop.
BIOS Overclocking
1.Read the allowed settings of your particular processor and motherboard on the manufacturer's website. These figures give you an idea of the “headroom” or overclocking capability your CPU and motherboard may have. Check forums for possible front-side bus multiplier resets. Become familiar with the terminology and physics involved before attempting any clock speed adjustments.
2.Start your laptop and open the BIOS by clicking the F1, F3 or F8 key or some combination of keys immediately as the machine begins its boot cycle. Check your manufacturer's website to find which one works for your make and model.
3.Navigate to the CPU settings page. Several laptop makers including HP and Dell do not allow changes to be made in the CPU settings to protect the hardware. Those that do permit overclocking warn users of the danger inherent to the procedure. If your machine does not allow access to the CPU settings, you need to try another method.
4.Enable the CPU Host Clock Controller on the CPU settings page. Increase the CPU frequency by approximately 5 percent and save the settings.
5.Restart the laptop and check for stability. Repeat the process in 3 to 5 percent intervals until you reach 20 percent. If the operating system becomes unstable shut down the machine immediately and reduce the CPU frequency by five percent. Recheck for stability.
Generic Software Overclocking
1.Download and install overclocking and stress testing software and follow the section 1, step 1 instructions.
2.Open the overclocking software and navigate to the CPU settings page.
3.Adjust the front-side bus multiplier upwards in 5 percent increments until you reach a 20 percent increase in clock speed to make upward adjustments in the CPU clock speed.
4.Use the stress testing software to test for stability.
Turbo Boost and Overdrive Overclocking
1.Download and open the Intel Turbo Boost or the AMD Overdrive software bundle and read the documentation thoroughly.
2.Follow the directions laid out in either manual. Do not try to increase clock speed beyond recommended parameters.
3.Stress-test the final setting for at least 12 hours before deciding to keep the overclock level you have set.
Things Needed
- Overclocking software
- Lapping tools (optional)
- Laptop cooler (optional)
Tip
- Use a laptop fan-driven cooling base or similar cooling system whenever you can. Make sure the air intake on your laptop is clean and dust free. If you are familiar with the inside of your laptop, remove and lap the heatsink.
Warning
- Remove the battery when you're overclocking your machine. If the laptop becomes unstable, pull the power plug immediately. Heed the repeated warnings in the Intel and AMD overclocking manuals.
