I have a device that I need to program through a serial port. The problem is my laptop doesn't a serial port. I do however have a serial-to-USB cable that I can plug in. I can then set it to use COM1.
So to program the device in question I have to boot to a floppy drive and run the programming application in a DOS environment. In order for the serial-to-USB cable driver to work I have to have Windows running. To work around this problem I thought I could use a virtual machine in Hyper-V or VirtualBox that could map a serial port to a named pipe. Here's where I'm getting confused.
It would seem like what I need to do is somehow serve my COM1 port to a named pipe on my laptop. I could then point the virtual machine to that named pipe. I see how to point the virtual machine to a named pipe. I just don't see how to 'serve' that named pipe from my laptop. I've read around about creating named pipes and such, but I still don't see how to map my COM1 port to the named pipe so I can then in turn connect to it with a virtual machine.
Is this possible to do? Is my thought process flawed?

Configure VirtualBox

First set up a serial port in VirtualBox. In the Details section for the virtualmachine, click Serial Ports, check Enable Serial Port, set Port Mode to HostPipe, check Create Pipe and put e.g. /tmp/freebsd8vm-socket in Port/File Path.

Now start the virtual machine. Use socat to connect the domain socketcreated by VirtualBox to a pty.

It should be possible to now connect to the serial port with screen. If youdisconnect the screen session the pty will be removed, so the above socatcommand will need to be run again.

These instructions apply at least to Debian Lenny, but probably will at leastmostly work on other Linux systems as well.

Uncomment/modify this line in /etc/inittab for serial console.

Tell init to re-read inittab

Now we have to tell grub and the kernel (via grub) to use a serial console aswell. Add the following to /boot/grub/menu.lst

Now update the Debian automagic kernel sections

I also added noapic to the kernel options to prevent the system fromperiodically freezing at boot

It is handy to be able to ssh to the VM. When using the default NAT networkconfiguration for VirtualBox, the only way to make network connections from thehost to the guest system is with port forwarding. The following commands willforward port 2222 on the host to 22 on the guest VM. Unfortunately this makesthe host listen on 0.0.0.0, and I have not found a way to make it only listenlocally.
