Holux M-241 GPS Logger


The Holux M-241 is a popular GPS data logger manufactured by Holux Technology, Inc., Hsinchu, Taiwan and is covered extensively on various sites. The M-241 is my current (and first) logger and I continues to meet my needs. On this site, I’ll provide as much coverage on the M-241 and how I use it to geotag my photos.
I had decided to purchase a M-241 to geotag my photos on a once in a lifetime vacation, before I found that a friend owned one. Luckily I was able to borrow his Holux and confirm that it worked well with a Mac and that it met my needs to support geotagging my photos prior to my trip and purchased my own unit.
What made the Holux M-241 stand out for me was its compact size and that it was powered by a single AA battery. Many of the other GPS loggers require a proprietary battery which was a drawback, especially when travelling. While the documentation recommends using an alkaline AA battery, I have successfully used NIMH rechargeable batteries for a full days recording without any issue, so long as they are fully charged. (I use Maha PowerEx 2700mAh or IMEDION 2400mAh NIMH batteries.)
The M-241 also has a 128x32 pixel LCD display that can show status, current position, and device status which is a plus compared to other units that often have no displays.
For computer connectivity, the M-241 supports a dual interface (Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP) and USB) and is capable of recording up to 130,000 positions, including longitude, latitude, time, and altitude. For my first vacation, I set up Bluetooth connectivity and had no issues downloading my tracks at the end of each day.

Connecting the Holux M-241 to a Mac

The following notes are based on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but also work with 10.7 (Lion).
In order to download GPS tracks off the Holux M-241 logger, it needs to be set up either as a Bluetooth device or you need to install the appropriate USB driver. Both processes are straightforward and detailed below.

Bluetooth Pairing with a Mac


First, ensure that Bluetooth is on and new devices are Discoverable.
If you have Bluetooth in the menu bar, this can be done by clicking on the menu and selecting the Set Up Bluetooth Device.. option. If not, then launch System Preferences and select Bluetooth, from the Internet & Wireless options, and select the + option under the list of Bluetooth devices to set up a new device.
Once the the Bluetooth Setup Assistant has started, turn on the Holux GPS and wait for it to be displayed in the list of devices.

When the Holux M-241 shows up as a device, select it, and click the Continue button and Setup Assistant will automatically attempt to pair the Holux with your Mac.


If pairing is successful, you should see something similar to the following dialog, and you can quit out of the assistant.

When the Setup Assistant wizard finishes, the M-241 will show up as paired but not connected. This is normal. the M-241 will only show as connected when you are downloading a GPX track. Also the Bluetooth icon on the M-241 display will not be displayed as the serial port hasn’t been opened yet.


If the M-241 has been set up correctly an entry called tty.HOLUX_M-241-SPPSlave will be created in the Mac /dev directory.
Open a UNIX shell (Terminal application) and try to run the command cat /dev/tty.HOLUX_M-241-SPPSlave and the Bluetooth icon on the the M-241 should appear almost immediately. Wait another 30 seconds and the last position information should be dumped in the shell. Press CTRL-C to abort. If “No such file or directory” is displayed then the device may have not been set up correctly.
At times, I have found that syncing with the Holux is been finicky, however unpairing (deleting) and re-creating the pairing has sometimes solved any connectivity issue that I've had.

Mac USB Connectivity

Out of the box, you can not connect a Holux M-241 to a Mac via USB, but it is possible.

Caution: Once I set up USB connectivity I had trouble getting Bluetooth connectivity to work again. I have no evidence that that this is the cause, but I need to do some more investigation on why I now continuously get Bluetooth connectivity errors.
